Afghanistan and Pakistan have seen considerable troop build up and escalation in the use of force in the fight against Tailban affiliated groups in recent months. At the same time disparate attempts have been made at negotiating with these and other groups. The prospect of a possible NATO troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2011 and onwards introduces further dynamisms to the political and security manoeuvring of the actors in the region. The recent floods in Pakistan is also a complicating factor, it offers opportunity for the US and others to show solidarity, at the same time as troubled relief efforts may play into the hands of the Taliban.
In this panel debate we invite Mr Rashid and Mr Eide to reflect on the current situation, including the outcomes, both positive and negative, of the force escalation, flood relief efforts, and also the current status in negotiation attempts, including attention to how the prospect of troop withdrawal may play out in local and regional politics.
Negotiation is also key to current inter-state relations between Pakistan-Afghanistan and also Pakistan-India. Improved relations between these countries are essential for Afghanistan’s stabilisation process. Mr Rashid and Mr Eide will also be invited to comment on the regional dimension.
