The interest in the Northern Areas has traditionally been strong in Norway. The activities that were conducted by Dr. Fridtjof Nansen are a clear manifestation of these interests. The current Stoltenberg government also places a large emphasis on the Northern Areas, and has presented a strategy for them. In recent years, global warming has made the opening of the Northern Sea Route for ocean transport seem a viable option, Japan has decided to become an observer in the Arctic Council and both countries share similar concerns on these interrelated issues.

Dr. OHTA, who is very knowledgeable about the Northern Areas, will talk about the formation of the Arctic from a geological point of view, about the history of the discovery, exploration and development of the area and problems currently being created by global warming. He will also talk about the activities of Japan in the area.

Dr. OHTA is a non-fulltime Senior Researcher of Norsk Polarinstitutt, working at the Natural History Museum of the University of Oslo. He took a Ph.D. in Science (Geology) at Hokkaido University, Japan, in 1962, and came to Norway for the first time in 1964. Between 1972 and 1998, he worked as a Researcher for the Norwegian Polar Institute.
He has visited Svalbard more than 30 times, has published many articles about geology, and translated Dr. Fridtjof Nansen’s book “Fram over Polhavet” into Japanese.

Dr. Olav ORHEIM was the Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute from 1993 to 2005. He is currently serving as Adviser for the Department for Climate and the Environment of the Research Council of Norway.
